10 in 30 days – Completed 1 month on events business side after 22-year stint in Corporate. Sharing some learnings / observations from someone who comes from a long stint in corporate sector basis my limited (30-day) experience. It’s just my perspective – would love to hear any more experiences.

1. Being in corporate gives you good understanding across functions – however, in business, you have no choice but to understand every aspect/function to survive.

2. One line of business, you do works well – which yields profits is what you think Vs. One needs to enter multiple businesses to spread the risk during difficult times.

3. One easily gets used to seeing salary hit your account on a fixed date Vs. First, you need to pay the salary, take care of expenses and then think of your own salary.

4. In corporate, the work is the environment you are working in Vs. In business, every person you meet expands your environment.

5. In corporate, you have this swanky office with great facilities Vs. In business, you think profits in order to decide how lavish you want to get.

6. In corporate, you can stay away from things like GST and TDS and leave it to finance team Vs. In Business, if you don’t understand these concepts – it will be difficult to survive.

7. In corporate, your ownership is limited to your area of work Vs. In Business, you better take ownership and accountability of everything.

8. In corporate, you apply for leave and you get leave Vs. In Business, you yourself feel guilty of taking leave and you are still always working even when on leave.

9. In corporate, you always have someone as a Boss to take your decisions if you get stuck Vs. In Business, you HAVE TO take the decision, own it and move on.

10. In corporate, you have so many people supporting you and looking after you like HR, L&D team, finance and many other departments Vs. In Business, you take care of yourselves and others as well.

It’s been interesting 30 days for me as I set my feet in business world. And I am excited and looking forward to exciting times…
